Appearance
As mentioned, you can easily spot American Bobtails due to their wild-like looks and short tails. They’re characterized by a large, muscular build with a wide head, eyes, and pointy ears. Once mature, they reach a weight of 7 kgs (16 pounds) and grow up to 70 cm (30 inches). Furthermore, Bobtails boast all sorts of coat colors and patterns, though they usually boast either short or long-haired coast with wild markings. At first glance, they almost resemble a wild lynx or bobcat, hence the name.
Naturally, the American Bobcats’ most distinct feature is their short tail. Breeders pay special attention to it because those with no tails are usually prone to spinal issues. If you’re following standards, the tail should be long enough to be visible above the back when held up straight.
American Bobtails Characteristics
American Bobtails can easily adapt to any environment, making them the ideal pets. They form strong bonds with other animals and get along well with families, especially children. Due to their friendly nature, they’re also used as therapy cats.
Now, why do breeders connect them to Golder Retrievers? Well, American Bobtails are very affectionate and friendly, but they also like to fetch toys. In some cases, they won’t mind being leash-trained! Yet, unlike these dogs, they don’t need huge spaces to live in.
Bobtails don’t need frequent exercise, so they can adapt well in small houses or apartments. Simply put, despite their wild-like appearance, these friendly cats can be the perfect pets!
History
American Bobtails developed through natural selection, though they began to be purposely made in the late 1960s. Josh and Brenda Sanders, two American vacation-goers, spotted a brown tabby kitten with a short tail in Arizona and brought it home.
The kitten mated with their other color-pointed cat. Ultimately, their litter inherited the distinct short tail, wild markings, and friendly personalities. Cat aficionados took a particular interest in them, and from that point on, American Bobtails became officially recognized by the International Cat Association (TICA).
Care
Aside from their affectionate nature, cat breeders love how low-maintenance American Bobtails are! You need to brush their coats once or twice per week to keep them healthy. Additionally, these cats shed more due to seasonal changes, so more frequent brushing is needed. Like any other cat breed, you’ll need to brush their teeth at least once per week and supplement them with plaque-controlling treats.
Finally, Bobtails don’t need regular exercise. Like dogs, they like to fetch and play with toys, so they can easily keep themselves occupied. Still, they like human affection, so ensure to play with them for at least half an hour daily.
As you can see, American Bobtails are some of the friendliest cats out there, despite their wild features. They make great family companions and can fit in just about everywhere! Unfortunately, this cat breed can sometimes be hard to find. With that in mind, always seek reputable breeders.
